MICHAEL VAN DER MEIDE is a Dutch fashion label by fashion designer Michael van der Meide in Rotterdam since 2004.
,,Real style is in the nature of being your true self”
Just three more miles to go… His first independent collection launched at the prestigious Festival Internationales des Arts de La Mode in Hyeres 2004. Inspired on the oldest dream of mankind to be able to fly. This colourful poetic collection of draped vintage re-cycled parachute dresses which transform by wind won Michael two international design awards the HENRI BENDEL Award (New York) and PUNTOSETA Award (Como) Henri Bendel a well known high end fashion department store on Fifth Avenue would produce his collection and sell it in their stores, instead he got a money prize of €6.500,= to invest in his launching business and with Puntoseta one of Italy’s finest textile manufacturers Michael created many high end textiles for his collections with the team. From here on his label took flight!
Michael started his study to become a classic tailor at the Tailoringschool in the Hague specialised in menswear when he was only seventeen. After he got his degree he went to Charles Montaigne (AMFI) a re-knowned Fashion Academy in Amsterdam where he became a fashion designer and specialised in womenswear. Michael trained his technical, design and presentation skills with the British Queen of Punk Vivienne Westwood, he did research for the conceptual Hussein Chalayan. Dutch Couturier Frans Molenaar learned him how to be a fashion designer and Frank Govers taught him how to embroider couture dresses and make a big impression with your work. After buying his first vintage parachute at Skydivers atelier Caroline Suits in 2003 Caroline and Pim taught him everything he wanted to know about the skydiving world, production, design of freely suits and formation suits. Aziz Bekkaoui taught him the importance of clean cut in production of couture.
Michael is a poet. He is inspired by Mother Nature, the four elements Air, Water, Earth, Fire, light/dark, movement and transformation. He observes everything and looks at people in the way they dress, move, behave and what moves them. He is very intuitive when it comes to shape, colour, texture and materials. He plays, cuts, folds, drapes and pleats with the dynamics and characteristics of fabrics to create movement. He searches for total purity in form and succeeds in creating imposing structures through lightness and fluidity.
In his label RE-DEFINITIONS (since 2012) he works with artisans from around the world. ,,Here we strive towards a zero waste approach good for the environment and for people. People Planet Profit. At the moment we are rapidly transforming the company into a 100% ethic fashion and lifestyle brand where materials are sourced, cut with no waste, re-used, re-cycled, re-fined, transformed, re-created and re-designed into relevant unique clothes and lifestyle products for everyday life. Going back to his roots in Hellevoetsluis where it all started learning the craft of transforming and re-design from his creative parents. His mother a very good seamstress, decorator and nurse his father a very good technician, tugboat captain, commando and painter transformed the house and the tugboat ‘Oldtimer’ from 1938 we had for twenty five years into something magical…
,,I want to create things with meaning that make the world more beautiful using things from the past and the present for the future! Touch people with the things I create and enhance their life! Creating and transforming things comes natural… it has to have soul and tell a story I inherited this ability from my parents.”
